Kirtan (January 2025)

Kirtan (Hawaiian Style)

Join Laurie Freed as she plays the ukulele and chants simple kirtan mantras.

A kirtan is an ancient Indian call-and-response style song or chant, set to music.

It is a way of narrating, describing, or sharing traditional mantras. Mantras are sacred sound forms that have specific focus and energy. They are meant to guide and protect us.

Among the traditional instruments used for a kirtan are the harmonium, the tabla and flute. Being in Hawaii, the ukulele seems appropriate and works quite well!

Chanting as a group brings people together as a community in a way that other forms of yoga do not have. It creates a sense of connection and unity.

Menstrual Health Workshop

Geeta Iyengar, BKS Iyengar's eldest daughter, wrote Yoga: A Gem for Women in 1983, providing important, insightful, necessary guidance to adapt āsana and prānāyāma practices to women's cycles of life. Among the most useful are her recommendations for menstruation. So many women attest to how much learning her menstrual sequence has alleviated pain, cramps, headaches, backaches, irregular cycles, and so much more! Come and learn this wonderful sequence and enhance your relationship with your monthly cycle.

Gwi-Seok Hong has specialized in yoga for women's health for over 20 years. She loves sharing the wisdom of the practice and hearing how much these lessons have benefited women over the years. She has been a student of Lois Steinberg's since 2001, who wrote Geeta Iyengar's Guide to a Woman's Yoga Practice, which is the basis for much of Gwi-Seok's teaching.
